Exploring what it means to be human as artificial intelligence reshapes our world

Last week the Australian British Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) held a thought-provoking event on the theme “Being Human in a World of AI”, hosted by KPMG and AutogenAI. The discussion explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping society and asked critical questions: How do we ensure AI enhances — rather than diminishes — the human experience? And how can we shape its future to reflect our values, not just our technological capabilities?

An expert panel featuring Professor Jon Whittle FRSA, Emma Crichton (pictured below) and Dhawal Jaggi guided the conversation, offering deep insights into how AI is evolving — not only as a tool, but also as a companion, coach, and decision-maker. The panel reflected on what it means to stay human in an era where attention is currency and technology often moves faster than society’s ability to respond. Importantly, they emphasised that we must guide this transformation with intention, so that we do not just adapt to the future but play an active role in shaping it.

Some reflections from Steven Holloway, who attended the event, included:

‘Jon observed that undertaking individual tasks more efficiently does not necessarily create a more productive organisation. Rather, AI can take on routine tasks that allow us to ‘slow down’ and focus on activities that truly drives productivity.

And Emma noted that AI should be viewed as a tool — much like any other — that can support higher education and vocational training. The focus must be on understanding how it can help us work smarter and achieve better outcomes, but not to the detriment on our ability to think critically.’

Overall, it was an insightful and engaging discussion that underscored both the opportunities and responsibilities we face in harnessing AI for the benefit of people, organisations, and society as a whole.
