Undertaking a market scan to benchmark in-use hardware and software

The client’s challenge was to validate its initial selection of an end-user device and supporting software development.

Chatham Square was engaged through an industry partner to undertake a market scan to determine which industry hardware providers could deliver an end-user device that meets the client’s high-level requirements and local software providers that could deliver a sovereign binary in partnership with the hardware provider.

The initial analysis determined a market scan followed by a targeted questionnaire would be used to determine local sovereign binary capability. Additionally, a separate online market scan of likely candidate end-user devices, using the current in-house device, to assist with the shortlisting process.

The online market scan initially identified 20 candidate devices, from which eight were ultimately shortlisted. All eight were either compliant or partially compliant against the client’s key requirements.

Based on the questionnaire results, it was found that the software binary market is relatively niche. After a shortlisting process, nine companies were chosen as potential industry providers to support the delivery of a sovereign binary solution. Among these companies, only three had experience in Custom ROM development.

• Use clear and simple graphics to illustrate shortlisting methodology.
• Start with broad market analysis to capture potential out-of-the-box solutions.
• Always have ongoing checks with a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ for critical analysis.
• Understand the client’s needs at both operational and technical levels.
• Develop a schedule without excessive detail for the work required.
